A Category A motorcycle license is the full, unrestricted motorcycle license in the UK. It allows you to ride any size of motorcycle, with no restrictions on engine power, weight, or type of bike. Here’s the full breakdown:

Category A License (UK)

Once you have a Category A license, you can legally ride:

• Motorcycles of any engine size (there are no limits on engine capacity or power output).

This gives you the freedom to ride large motorcycles, such as sports bikes, touring bikes, cruisers, and choppers, with no limitations.

Requirements for a Category A License

To get a Category A license, you need to meet one of the following conditions:

1. Age
   • 24 years old or over (if you go straight for a full license)
   • 21 years old or over if you’ve held a Category A2 license for at least 2 years.
2. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
   • You must complete the CBT course (if you don’t already hold a full category A1 or A2 motorcycle license).
3. Motorcycle Theory Test
   • You must pass the motorcycle theory test, which consists of:
     • Multiple-choice questions
     • Hazard perception test
4. Practical Test
   • You must pass the practical motorcycle test:
     • Module 1: Off-road manoeuvres and handling
     • Module 2: On-road riding with an examiner
5. Provisional License

What You Can Ride with an A License

Upgrading to Category A License

• If you have an A2 license, you can upgrade to an A license once you’ve held it for two years (and you’re at least 21).
