Category A1 License (UK)

A Category A1 license allows you to ride motorcycles that meet the following criteria:
  • Engine size up to 125cc
  • Power output up to 11kW (around 15 horsepower)
  • Weight-to-power ratio restrictions apply

You must meet these requirements before you can get an A1 license:
  1. Age
    • You must be at least 17 years old
  2. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
    • You must complete a CBT course
  3. Theory Test
    • Pass the motorcycle theory test, which includes a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test.
  4. Practical Test
    • Pass a practical riding test that involves:
      • An off-road manoeuvring test (Mod 1)
      • An on-road riding test (Mod 2)
  5. Provisional License
    • You need a provisional motorcycle license to take your CBT, theory, and practical tests.

With an A1 license, you can ride:
  • Motorcycles with a maximum engine size of 125cc.
You can also carry a pillion passenger and ride on motorways, which is not allowed with just a CBT.

  • The A1 license is valid indefinitely once obtained.
  • If you want to upgrade to a higher category (like A2 or A), you would need to take additional tests or meet other requirements.

If you’re under 24 and want to move up to the A2 or A license:
  • You can upgrade after two years from passing your A1 test or when you turn 24
