A Category A2 motorcycle license is the next step up from the A1 license in the UK motorcycle licensing system. It allows you to ride motorcycles with greater engine power and capacity than the A1 category, but with restrictions compared to the full Category A license.

With an A2 license, you are allowed to ride:

- The bike’s power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW per kg.
Requirements for an A2 License
To get your Category A2 license, you must meet the following:
- Age
- You must be at least 19 years old to apply for an A2 license.
- Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
- If you don’t already have a category A1 motorcycle license, you’ll need to take and complete a CBT course before taking the theory and practical tests.
- Theory Test
- As with the A1 license, you must pass a motorcycle theory test, which includes:

- You need to pass the A2 practical test, which consists of:
- Module 1: Off-road riding and manoeuvring.
- Module 2: On-road riding with an examiner following you.

- You must hold a provisional motorcycle license before taking the tests.
What You Can Ride with an A2 License
With an A2 license, you can ride motorcycles that:
- Have an engine size above 125cc but no larger than 400cc.
- Have a maximum power output of 35kW (47 horsepower).
Upgrading from A2 to A
After holding an A2 license for two years, you can upgrade to the Category A (full motorcycle) license if you are at least 21 years old.
- You would need to take the Module 1 and Module 2 tests again (or just the Module 2, depending on the rules in place at the time).
- The A2 license is often a stepping stone for those who want to eventually ride unrestricted motorcycles, like large touring bikes or sport bikes.
How Long is the A2 License Valid?
The A2 license is valid for life once you pass the tests, as long as you don’t have any issues with your license or riding.
